USCIS Fee Increase
Navigating the USCIS Fee Increase: What You Need to Know
Why This Matters
Immigrating to the United States is already a life-changing journey—one filled with hopes, sacrifices, and challenges. But with the new USCIS visa and immigration fee increases, that journey just became more expensive.
If you or your loved ones are planning to file for asylum, TPS, work permits, or other immigration benefits, understanding these fee updates is critical to avoid delays, denials, or financial surprises.
That’s where having an experienced immigration lawyer by your side makes all the difference.
What’s Changing?
1. New USCIS Fees Under H.R. 1 (OBBBA)
Starting July 22, 2025, USCIS is introducing new mandatory fees. Applications without the correct updated payment will be rejected if postmarked after August 21, 2025.
Key new fees include:
-
$100 for Form I-589 (Asylum application), plus a $100 annual asylum fee for pending cases.
-
$550 for initial Employment Authorization (EAD) for asylum, parolees, and TPS applicants; $275 for renewals.
-
$500 for Temporary Protected Status (TPS – Form I-821), plus the $550 EAD fee.
-
$250 for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS – Form I-360).
2. The New “Visa Integrity Fee”
Beginning around October 1, 2025, most non-immigrant visa applicants (tourist, student, work, and exchange visitors under B, F, J, H categories) will need to pay a $250 “visa integrity fee.”
This fee may be refunded if you follow visa rules (timely departure, no violations). Travelers from Visa Waiver Program countries may be exempt.
Why It Matters for You
Applicants | Impact of Fee Changes |
---|---|
Asylum & Work Permit Filers | Heavier financial requirements; new upfront and recurring fees. |
TPS & SIJS Applicants | Families may face new burdens, making free or low-cost legal guidance essential. |
Students, Tourists & Workers | Added $250 “visa integrity fee” before even stepping foot in the U.S. |
What Should You Do Next?
-
Double-Check Your Application Fees
Any application filed after July 22, 2025 must include the updated payments—or risk automatic rejection. -
Confirm the Total Cost Before Filing
Always review the latest USCIS fee schedule (Form G-1055). -
Explore Fee Waivers (If Eligible)
While many of the new H.R. 1 fees are non-waivable, some existing fees may still qualify under Form I-912. -
